I'm Aedan Mikelonis- scenic carpenter, designer, and aspiring educator. I'm based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and work in the surrounding Greater Philadelphia Area. Through my work, I try to blend precision and safety with creative problem-solving, while maintaining an environment where students feel like a part of the process in a meaningful way.
Though my theatre experience started near the end of high school, I've dived into the deep end, and fully immersed myself in technical theatre. I specialize in scenic carpentry- though I also have experience as a scenic designer and painter. Along the way, I've found a passion and ability in myself in teaching hands-on skills to young aspiring artists. One of my biggest regrets is not starting my journey sooner; I want to invoke a passion for the arts at an early age in students like myself who just needed a little extra help getting there.
Outside of the scene shop, I'm always trying to find ways to keep myself busy- whether that be solving imaginary problems for sets I'm not even scheduled to work on anytime in the near future, or actually relaxing once in a while. Project Notes
For budget reasons, the set of High School Musical on Stage! is largely repurposed from our prior production of Willy Wonka JR, except a few changes, like the structure of the staircase. For me, the major success of this set is not its design, rather its build process. This was our first production constructed entirely by the stage crew (ages 10-14), without help from parents or other volunteers. This is not an exaggeration- though many of the frames were intact and stored after Willy Wonka JR, I largely stood to the side as a sort of safety advisor. Almost every wall, stair, and paint job was put up, screwed together, and finished by one of our many incredible and capable stage crew members! It was a gift to see the team come together and produce something that- dare I say- most would be shocked to discover was built by middle schoolers.

While this show was technically the second I ever designed and built, I'd largely consider it my first. It was also my first time teaching students, and, to my knowledge, the first time in a while the "stage crew" at the school had been involved in the build process (as opposed to being only a run crew). Working on this show was a formative experience for me as an artist, and is largely what inspired me to want to pursue theatre education.

Project Notes
This show marked the start of our first attempt at a two show school-year, separating into a fall musical (5th and 6th grade) and a spring musical (7th and 8th grade). These grade separations only ended up being for cast members; the stage crew had students grades 5-8, with the goal of maintaining the same crew between shows. This was also my first show to have such a quick turnaround time. While I'm aware that a lot of productions have leadup of one month or less... I had around three months to construct Seussical, and that was really my first build I had ever led. Despite everything though, with the help of our incredible stage crew students, and parent volunteers, we finished our set for Wonka with (hours?) to spare!

When I heard that SALT was looking for a substitute Master Carpenter for their production of The Little Mermaid, I thought to myself, "I'll check my schedule later." When I heard that SALT was looking to build a functional pool with fountains for their production of The Little Mermaid, I threw my calendar out the window and told them I was available immediately. This was my first show working as a master carpenter outside of educational theatre- and while I thought it would be a lot different, it was actually shockingly the same. The worst part? Not having a crew of 20 proficient students to knock out the tedious stuff for you! Jokes aside, I'm incredibly proud of how this set came out, and I'm incredibly grateful to SALT for trusting me to build this after only a few months of being a part of their team.

Project Notes
The production of this show, like any, was difficult, but the final product was absolutely incredible. I have no hesitation in saying it is one of the best theatre productions I have ever watched, and the cast and the rest of the production team did an incredible job. Though it is not pictured, our barber's chair begins its descent on the far end of stage left, where it rolls across the entire back wall, across the whole stage, down to stage right, and Mr. Todd's victim falls off.
